The School College and Ability Test (SCAT) is an Aptitude test.
Participating in CTY’s Talent Search is an achievement. Receiving a qualifying score can earn your bright young learner an invitation to one of their recognition ceremonies or the opportunity to enroll in their engaging summer and online programs.
This test is administered by the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) at Johns Hopkins to identify talented 2nd graders – 12th graders. It is divided into three tiers, according to grade level. The SCAT assessment has both a verbal and quantitative section. The verbal section consists of questions that test vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and information skills. The quantitative section tests mathematical reasoning, calculations, math facts, and number operations.
In the verbal section, your child will need to demonstrate their understanding of the meanings of words with the choices given. They will pick the words or phrases that best complete an analogy. Some of the questions may have several suitable answers. Your child needs to decide which one is better suited.
The quantitative section assesses the child’s ability in mathematical reasoning, calculations, and number operations.
For this section, they will need to compare two sums or statements and determine whether the totals are equal, or if one is greater or if enough information is provided to find the total sum.
Each section is 22 minutes and there is an optional 10-minute break in between each one. It is important to note that your child is solely responsible for taking their break.
The timer for the second section will start whether your child is there or not.
Each section holds 55 questions, only 50 of which are scored. The remaining five are for research purposes.
It is important to remember that each question must be answered before your child can move on to the next one. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Both sections must be completed on the same day and within your allocated time slot.
This test can be taken twice in the same academic year.

Your child can review the mistakes and learn from them. This will help in improving their test scores
The student’s dashboard and parent dashboard will show the Analytics on the number of times tests are taken and the time spent on test scores, and more. This analysis will help them to practice more in the areas of need and improve their scores on real tests.
