Grade 6 Math Curriculum

Location: Aldie

Unit 1:  Ratios and Proportions

·       The student will represent relationships between quantities using ratios, and will use appropriate notations, such as a/b  , a to b, and b.

·      Determine whether a proportional relationship exists between two quantities

·      Determine the unit rate of a proportional relationship and use it to find a missing value in a ratio table;

·     Determine to represent a proportional relationship between two quantities, including those arising from practical situations;

·      Determine whether a proportional relationship exists between two quantities; and

·      The student will solve single-step and multistep practical problems, using proportional reasoning.

·      Make connections between and among representations of a proportional relationship between two quantities using

      verbal descriptions, ratio tables, and graphs.

·       Using laws of exponents simplify exponents

·       Perfect squares.

Unit 2:  Fractions Review

·       Represent and determine equivalencies among fractions, mixed numbers.

·       Add and Subtract fractions

·       Multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers;

·       Solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of

        fractions and mixed numbers.

Unit 3:  Decimals Review

·       Represent and determine equivalencies among decimals

·       Add and Subtract decimals.

·       Multiply and divide decimals.

·       Solve multistep practical problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals.

·       Decimal to percent conversion, Fraction to percent conversion

Unit 4:  Integers Review

·       Identify and represent integers;

·       Compare and order integers; and

·       Identify and describe absolute value of integers.

·       Add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers;

·       Solve practical problems involving operations with integers; and

·       Simplify numerical expressions involving integers.

Unit 5:  Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

·       The student will solve one-step linear equations in one variable, including practical problems that require the solution of a one-step linear equation in one variable.

·       Represent a practical situation with a linear inequality in one variable; and

·       Solve one-step linear inequalities in one variable, involving addition or subtraction, and graph the solution on a number line.

Unit 6:  Geometry

·       Identify the components and graph ordered pairs in a coordinate plane.

·       Find the missing angle of the triangle and quadrilateral

·       Given a point, apply transformations, to include translations, reflections, and dilations, in the coordinate plane

Unit 7:  Measurement

·       Solve problems, including practical problems, involving circumference and area of a circle

·       Solve problems, including practical problems, involving area and perimeter of triangles and rectangles.

·      Find the missing side dimensions of 2-D figures

·      Solve problems and determine the volume and surface area of rectangular prisms

Unit 8:  Probability and Statistics

·       Mean, Median ,Mode, Range, Lower and Upper quartile values for the given data set.

·       Determine the effect on measures of center when a single value of a data set is added, removed, or changed.

·       Make observations and inferences about data represented in a histogram

·       Compare histograms with the same data represented in stem-and-leaf plots, line plots, and circle graphs.

·       Probability of independent and dependent events
